Letting go into the bliss and joy of stillness
R: I wanted to return to this idea of letting go, which I’m always returning to because I’m always doing it throughout the day whenever I find some issue.
G: So, let go. (laughs)
R: Yes, and sometimes I even have to let go of letting go!
G: (laughs) Let go of letting go!
R: Exactly! One of the things that I think is important to explore in letting go is that it doesn’t mean, in my experience anyway, just letting go of this or just letting go of that, although that can be part of your path. It is letting go of absolutely everything, and the kind of incredible joy that is there. I think that might be a way to start exploring the way in which surrender or acceptance or “thy will be done” are different languages for something which is an experience that is ineffable, actually. It qualifies as a mystical experience. When you really let go and experience that letting go—not just of this particular thing that’s bugging you or that particular thing that you’re worried about, but of it, of yourself, then it’s a kind of oceanic feeling. It’s just the liberation from this incredible weight of suffering that, speaking for myself again, I wasn’t even aware that I was carrying around with me. It’s almost a parasite on my consciousness that I have to let go of. What do you think about this idea of kind of amplifying the stakes of letting go?
G: Well, you’re quite a ways along, I’m not patronizing you, but you’re quite a ways along. So for you where you’re experiencing what you’re experiencing, that’s a great place to be. The folks who are much earlier in their work seem to need something that gets them into contacting it. Byron Katie’s work has been very useful, because it is a structured, very simple protocol. You just ask, “Is this thing I’m torturing myself with all day long, that goes on and on and on… is it true?” Just a very simple, “Is this thing true?” And folk say, “I never really thought about asking if it was true.” So then you start looking, “Is it true?”
Even in the process of looking at “Is it true?”, something starts to work. Then you ask, “Can you be certain it’s true?” You start to look at it. Again, in just the very act of looking at “Can I be certain it’s true?” you find “Well… not really…” Whatever the answer is for you, and then you ask, “How does it feel when you have this feeling?” If you’ve been torturing yourself, beating yourself, “blah, blah, blah” all day, you just say, “How do I feel right now? I feel crappy.” Then you ask, “How would you feel if you didn’t have this feeling…?” “A lot better.” Then the fifth part after those four questions is to turn that 180 degrees. “Is this thing just as likely to be true if it changed 180 degrees?” Changing “Mary hates me” into “Mary doesn’t hate me.
